Immigration Fines Update

As a quick update to the imposition of penalties for overstaying in Costa Rica, it seems that a new moratorium has been decreed.

Whilst it had been announced that starting November 01, 2018, tourists with expired entry stamps, temporary residence or special category visa holders with an expired DIMEX and foreign nationals who have been notified of a rejected immigration status but have not yet filed an appeal, among others, would face penalties prior to departing the country, we will now have to wait to see this applied.

In the meantime, however, foreign nationals should ensure that they have legal status in the country. This means making the necessary border runs, renewing the DIMEX on time, etc.

My residency expired on 02/02/18. I had tried to call the DIMEX number to make an appointment from October on and could not get a connection. I don’t know if the strike had anything to do with it or not. I had to return to the states the end of December and had no problem when I returned on the 3rd of January. I also just return from Cuba last week and had no trouble. What do I need to do to get the residency renewed?
    Thank you,
