The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) announced that, as of October 1st 2022, the ten thousand colones bill, printed on cotton substrate, will go out of circulation. Therefore, only the ₡10,000 bills that will have monetary value, are the ones made from polymer -a material similar to plastic-, which have been used since 2021.
What to expect?
The BCCR assured that no person who keeps the old bills will lose their money, since these can be exchanged or deposited in the financial institution in which each person maintains a bank account. The reception of these old bills will be maintained indefinitely.
The ₡10,000 cotton bills can also be exchanged for the new polymer ones, at the headquarters of the Bank of Costa Rica (BCR) and at their branches in San Isidro de El General, Ciudad Neily, Nicoya, Cañas and Ciudad Quesada.
Depending on the amount of money each person wishes to exchange or deposit, the bank may ask them to fill out a form to the application of Law 8204 on narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, drugs of unauthorized use, related activities, money laundering and terrorist financing.
According to the bank authorities, the new bills include an innovative security system of a transparent window and the effect on the color of the Costa Rican map, in order to check their authenticity and combat counterfeiting.
Also they are four times more durable, with the advantage that once removed from the economy due to deterioration, their waste material is 100% recyclable.
