Land borders were opened on April 5th, 2021. If you require a border run, you are able to now travel via land as well as air.
Please note: If traveling to Nicaragua, they require a negative Covid test within three calendar days of arrival or within 48 hours if traveling to Panama.
There is no time requirement for being outside of the country. That only applies if you are importing goods.
Prior to leaving Costa Rica, please review the requirements for insurance, quarantine, COVID19 tests for the country you are visiting. A quick tip: many private labs in Costa Rica have excellent turnaround time with COVID19 test results.
For those needing to do a border run, we have prepared this easy to reference checklist. Returning to Costa Rica you will need:
◻ Your valid passport
◻ If you have an application in progress, we suggest you carry with you the application filing receipt (known as plantilla) that shows your application number (expediente).
◻ Round trip ticket showing you will be exiting Costa Rica within 90 days. A bus ticket is also accepted.
◻ Insurance which covers the entire length of your stay and guarantees:
– Coverage for medical expenses in case of contracting COVID19. The insurance policy shall cover you for at least $50,000 USD in medical expenses.
– A minimum coverage of $2,000 USD for lodging.
This is a requirement for tourists and people with applications in progress.
◻ Completed Health Pass which can be found here. The Health Pass must be completed 48 hours prior to entering the country.
